Hida Folk Village Winter Illumination

Vibrant night life is definitely not Hida area's forte, as most shops close near sunset. We often get puzzled or disappointed looks from our guests when we tell them there is not much to do during the night except enjoying a nice meal at a restaurant, or having a drink or two at an Izakaya. That is why it is such good news to learn that there is something going on during the night, even in such a cold month of January.

Hida Folk Village, which is known for its traditional dwellings resembling those you see at Shirakawa-go, offers winter illumination starting from January 10 till the end of February. The dwellings will be lit against a snowy backdrop from 5.30pm till 9 pm, and such a spot is best suited to couples looking for a romantic night out, or photo maniacs vying to set up their camera stands at the best possible spots in order to take the best shots of such spectacular views. Probably the only challenge is actually getting there as there is no bus running during the night, meaning if you don't have a car, you have to walk all the way there in the dark, and probably in the snow as well. But I'm sure our guests will not be deterred that easily.
