"Chokeramaika" Great masquerade Bon dance

Summer in Japan is often assimilated to "bon dance".

However, here in Takayama we hold quite a special one at the end of July :

"Chokeramaika" Great masquerade Bon dance

"Chokeramaika" means in Hida dialect : "Won't you play around ?"
The main point of this event is the masquerade parade of its participants.
Funny, colorful, ridiculous, etc. people create teams and come wearing costume to participate at this big event.

Aji Matsuri - Festival of Taste + Street Jazz Festival

The Festival of Taste is back in September !


This weekend the Hida Autumn Food will be held in Honmachi.
Enjoy the friendly ambiance of the event and discover the popular foods of Hida Takayama. :

•  Hida beef on skewers - Gyu-kushi
• Hida beef sushi - Gyu-zushi
• Salty grilled river fish - Ayu/Amago/Iwana shio-yaki
• Sticky rice balls covered with a sweet soy sauce - Mitarashi dango
• Sticky rice covered with miso - Miso gobei
• Hida beef Croquette - Gyu-kuroke
• and so many others !

You will also be able to have some locals sake tasting ! Hida-Furukawa's sake, Hourai, has been selected best sake in the world ! Do not miss the chance to try it during this festival !

10th Street Jazz Festival in Takayama !

7 Jazz-bands from the region gathered to this Festival. 

A free event bringing you music in the old street.

Summer Nakabashi Light-up!!

Most of shops are closed around 17:00 in Takayama.
What can we do in the evening in Takayama?

Many guests are asking those questions. Usually we recommend to go to Onsen or go to some bars, but now...Light-up season is coming!!

Nakabashi which is beautiful red and landmark bridge in Takayama will be lighten up from 19:30 to 22:00.
This event stars from July 5th to August 17th, 2014.
It's very beautiful and tasteful in the evening. You might find a different aspect of the bridge.

You can walk only for 5 min from J-hoppers to reach there.
I think you can experience nice walking  in old private houses area as well.

Takayama Hina Doll Festival♡

Do you know we celebrate the Girls' festival on March 3rd in Japan?
We decorate with Hina Doll to celebrate for girls.
Each doll has different faces because it's hand-made.

You can see many kinds of dolls in Takayama from March 1st to April 3rd.
This period, you can join the event "Stamp Rally" that you visit some places to see the dolls and collect stamps. 
If you collect the stamps, you can get a special souvenir!!
It's not only a fun activity, but also you can feel Japanese culture.

If you know "Hyoka" which is Japanese animation and is set in Takayama, there is a special course for it. And if you follow the course and correct some stamps, you can get "Hyoka" original goods as below.

It's only this season to see Hina Doll in Japan!
Why don't you visit Takayama and join the "Stamp Rally" event?

"Hida no Sato" Light-up Event!! (until Feb 28th)

Do you know "Hida no Sato" in Takayama?

It's a museum that you can see same buildings as Shirakawago(UNESCO world heritage site).
They held Light-up event every day until Feb 28th.
Normally the entrance fee is 700 yen, but it's only 300 yen for it.

And the bus fee going there is 200 yen for one-way.

If you couldn't get the bus ticket for Shirakawago light-up event or you feel too expensive to go to Shirakawgo light-up event, we absolutely recommend this opportunity!

"Hida no Sato" is not UNESCO world heritage site, but I think you can feel same atmosphere as Shirakawago!

It must be a great idea that you go to Shirakawago in the day time with J-hop tour and go to Light-up event in the night! It's affordable and you can enjoy two faces of the traditional old houses!

Takayama Food Festival on Nov 9th!! (Takara-ichi)

We had a big news!
People in Takayama will try to "Guinness World Records".
They will try to make the longest Hida beef spit‐roasting (150 m) !!
I hope it will be success!

After that, they will serve you the Hida Beef for free!
Normally Hida Beef is really really expensive, but you can eat it for free on that day!
I totally recommend to join it.

And not only for Hida beef, you can find many tasty food there!

You can go the place the festival will be held in 5 minutes from our guesthouse.
It's really near our guesthouse.

An Antique Fair

An antique fair started in 1982.
Held on the first Sunday of the month from April to October.

Fextival for Girl .

It's becoming more and more like Spring.

Do you know　Japanese festival called "Hina Matsuri"?

Hinamatsuri occurs on March 3 and is an occasion to pray for young girls' growth and happiness. Most homes with girls display dolls for the Doll's Festival and dedicate to them peach blossoms, rice cake cubes, special colored and diamond-shaped rice cakes, white sake, and other items.
The origin of hinamatsuri is an ancient Chinese practice in which the sin of the body and misfortune are transferred to a doll and washed away by setting the doll in a river to drift away. When this practice spread to Japan, it was linked to girl's playing with dolls and, in the Edo Period(1603-1867), was developed into the hinamatsuri.


In Takayama, the doll(Hina) festival is celebrated one month later then the traditional Doll's Day.
We celebrate the doll festival on the 3th of April.

Approximately one month before the festival day, traditional dolls are displayed at various locations in the city.

One of place which dispray the dolls is Hida Folk Village.
At the Maeda house, dolls are displayed at the Engawa.
"Engawa" is a narrow wooden passageway [deck] (along the edge of a house facing the garden).
You can sit back and get comfy with irori fireplace.

Setsubun Festival in Takayama.

*Parade: They will come to J-Hoppers (The last year , they come about 14:30)

＊ Setsubun （February 3 or 4）: the day before the beginning of spring according to the lunisolar calendar. On the evening of this day, people open the doors of their houses and drive the demons （i.e., bad luck） out of their homes and gardens by throwing handfuls of beans and shouting, "Demons out! Good luck in!"
